Fifteen percent of highly mobile workers plan to buy an iPhone

2 July 2007

apple iphoneThe Apple iPhone is revolutionizing the cellular phone market overnight, and the first research findings on the iPhone’s appeal are here today to prove it. Market research firm RDA Global released the results of a survey, powered by GMI, of more than 1,000 U.S. workers that use mobile devices when they travel, work away from the office, or telecommute. The findings reveal that 15% of respondents plan to purchase an iPhone within the next year. Considering there are 50 million such ‘highly mobile workers’ in the U.S., this market could account for 7.5 million unit sales in the first year.

“We expect Apple to capture sales from Blackberry, Treo and other high-end phone users — almost half of this group says that they plan to buy an iPhone,” explains Chris Seals, vice president of business development at RDA Global. “The survey responses indicate that the iPhone price of $500 to $600 is unlikely to deter the relatively better-off, young, well-educated and professional- type consumers, who tend to typically be Apple product fans.”

The iPhone has inspired some near fanatical desire: despite the high price range, about 45% of those planning to buy an iPhone indicated that they would be willing to pay a premium of 50% or more to get one. This spells out big sales for Apple, estimated by industry analysts to be at roughly 500,000 units over the first weekend.

“We expect the iPhone to have a substantial impact on how mobile workers currently communicate,” concludes Seals. “A 15 percent penetration of the mobile worker market in a short period of time could position the iPhone as the device of choice for the business segment of mobile hand-held products.”
