Tips for creating your own online survey

9 November 2007

We recently released a white paper detailing the best ways to release your own online survey. The paper is 4 pages long so obviously this blog post will be the uber condensed version. The first step is creating your survey invitation. Here you want to create an email with a compelling subject line, but you also have to get past the spam filters. Don’t use words like “discount” or “free”, also avoid capitalizing too much or using excessive punctuation.

Another factor to be cognizant of is the length of the survey. Your definition of a short survey may be very different from the respondents. Studies have shown that most respondents think a “short survey” is under six minutes, while a “long survey” is most often described as 19 minutes or more. So remember that when you tell respondents you want them to take a short 20 minute survey.

When you send out a survey mid-week is always best. Studies have shown that surveys attain the lowest response rates when sent out at the very beginning and end of the work week.
